On November 15, 2017, I had the pleasure of presenting at The Camosun School of Health and Human Services Awards Celebration held at the Trades Education and Innovation Centre. It was a lovely afternoon with music and food but the true highlight was meeting the two recipients of the awards sponsored by Phoenix.
The Phoenix Human Services Award was presented to Riley Vaskic, a student of the Community, Family and Child Studies Program. Riley was chosen as the recipient of this award as she demonstrated a passion for the field and practices from a strength-based approach. She also demonstrated exceptional caregiving skills and works well with diverse groups and circumstances.
The second award, the James Guthrie Memorial Award, was presented to Julia Parmar a student of the Community Support and Education Assistant Program. Julia was chosen as she exemplified someone with deep resonance for issues pertaining to social justice especially in regards to those involved in the disabilities world. She also was identified as someone who has an eloquence in both writing and speaking and a fullness of personality. Lastly, the recipient of this particular award has a passion for improving the system to make this a better world for all.
Both ladies really stood out to me as having bright futures ahead of them. Perhaps if history repeats itself, we may even cross paths again soon and be able to call them one of our very own!Donna Washington
